Residential parking and vehicle access assessment
A completed swept path assessment for a London residential development, testing four parking spaces and forward-gear access through an existing entrance.
Discuss your vehicle access requirementsThe brief
CLC was appointed to assess vehicle entry, parking manoeuvres and exit for four proposed residential parking spaces. The assessment needed to show whether the design vehicle could use the retained access and leave the site in forward gear.
The work was based on the supplied architectural layout. Client, consultant and site-identifying details are omitted from this project summary.
Assessment approach
A representative large passenger car, approximately 4.80 m long and 2.00 m wide, was tracked through the proposed layout using indicative low-speed manoeuvres. Individual access and egress plots were prepared for each parking space, allowing the movements to be reviewed separately.
The assessment considered the existing access opening, approximately 4.28 m wide, and the space available for internal manoeuvring.
Findings
The tracking demonstrated that the stated design vehicle could enter in forward gear, manoeuvre to and from all four assessed parking spaces and leave in forward gear through the retained entrance. One parking space required low-speed forward and reverse manoeuvring within the site.
These findings relate to geometric manoeuvrability for the assessed vehicle and layout. Final dimensions, levels, gates, landscaping, boundary treatments and other physical constraints must accord with the assessed arrangement. Material changes affecting the swept paths require review.
Deliverables and status
CLC completed eight swept path drawings, providing an individual access and egress plot for each of the four parking spaces, together with a covering technical note explaining the assessment basis, findings and limitations.
Status: assessment completed and submitted for planning. This case study records the completed consultancy work; it does not claim a planning approval or completion of the development.
